Samara Karoo Reserve

GREAT KAROO, SOUTH AFRICA

Samara Karoo Reserve

Eco Lodges

since june 2020

Samara is a passionate conservation undertaking to resurrect the Serengeti of the South. Started in 1997 by Mark and Sarah Tompkins, 67,000 acres of land have been restored, and Samara is working with local stakeholders to create South Africa’s 3rd largest protected area of 3 million acres in a Global Biodiversity Hotspot.

At Samara, landscapes that had barely a blade of grass in 1997 have recovered, so that the deep orange of the earth is now offset by green pockets of hope. Many indigenous species that had gone locally extinct have been reintroduced to the reserve, including the cheetah, elephant, black rhinoceros, lion, and herds of eland, hartebeest, and springbok. So successful has the project been that some species have returned of their own accord—particularly exciting have been the vulture and leopard.

CONSERVATION

Reintroduction of lions, cheetahs, elephants, and black rhinos into the landscape for the first time in 100 years.

Working with stakeholders to create the third-largest protected area in South Africa.

COMMUNITY

A hub of research and learning, hosting researchers, academics, school learners, and community groups on the reserve.

This corner of the Great Karoo is a land of historical significance, paleontological discovery, age-old cultures, intrepid explorers, colourful pioneers, and eccentric characters.

CULTURE

Preserving the Gaucho culture that has been passed down through generations, from the ancient Guachipas tribes.

A history teeming with stories and fascinating characters that weave a rich tapestry of historical experience in this special part of the Karoo.

COMMERCE

Conservation is integrated into the guest experience with a dedicated and tailored ‘Conservation Safari’.

With fragile ecosystems and a “tread lightly” policy, the preferred form of off-roading is on our own two feet, providing the ideal place for an unforgettable walking safari.
