Kwandwe's point in their sustainability journey

since january 2026

Sustainability at Kwandwe isn’t a box to be ticked. It’s a way of being; lived by people who know the land and care deeply for it.

It’s there in the quiet crackle of a fire at dusk, the hum of solar panels in the heat of the day, and the steady hands of those who call this place home.

Kwandwe Private Game Reserve is a conservation victory.

After reclaiming 30,000 hectares (74 000 acres) of farmland and placing it under wildlife conservation, the team has reintroduced endangered black rhinos and returned cheetah to the Great Fish River Valley for the first time since 1888, amongst many other achievements.

They're also committed to making a positive and lasting difference in the rural Eastern Cape, one of South Africa’s least developed provinces.

Working through our social development partner, the Ubunye Foundation, they invest in projects that improve lives and create sustainable livelihoods opportunities in marginalised rural communities.

Kwandwe’s 4C Commitments

CONSERVATION

In 2000, Kwandwe reintroduced both Black and White Rhinos to the land, launching one of the most successful Rhino recovery initiatives in the region.

They were also one of the first lodges to adopt solar-powered Rouxcel Technology foot collars, sleek devices that track rhino movements in real time to combat rhino poaching

COMMUNITY

Many members of Kwandwe’s team come from nearby areas, with long-term investment in training, career progression and leadership development.

Kwandwe established the Ubunye Foundation, a community development organisation that works to improve access to education, early childhood development and social support in neighbouring communities.

CULTURE

Kwandwe’s culture is shaped by the people who live and work here. A good example is Bongi, who began her career in hospitality and today serves as Operations Manager and a member of the senior management team at Kwandwe.

Guest feedback consistently highlights the warmth, professionalism and genuine care shown by the Kwandwe team. This culture underpins the way guests are hosted and how the reserve is managed.

COMMERCE

Every guest pays a CC&R Levy (Conservation, Community & Reserve): a nightly contribution that directly sustains three core pillars of impact: safeguarding the land, supporting local communities, and preserving biodiversity for generations to come.

In this way, each guest stay contributes to the long-term sustainability of both the landscape and the people connected to it.
