With four decades of experience operating what has grown to a portfolio of 60 camps across eight countries, Wilderness prides itself on being Africa’s leading conservation tourism operator. With camps across Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Rwanda, Kenya, and Tanzania, they immerse guests in fascinating environments, guiding them through expansive private concessions, fostering extraordinary encounters between them, nature, and culture.
Their business is best explained in two parts; conservation and hospitality. Through partnerships with trade industries, donors, governments, and local communities, they do as much as they can to protect and conserve the wild places they share with guests. And by bringing guests to their destinations, they impact the communities that live on the periphery of these wild places through conservation fees and employment.
On the hospitality side, their success dictates their impact on conservation, as it allows the support of ongoing empowerment initiatives. The more guests and partners are involved in their purpose, the greater the impact they can have in helping to protect these iconic destinations.
Wilderness travel journeys extend across a range of accommodation offerings, from exclusive luxury in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, to secluded safaris in Namibia, to exceptional journeys in Rwanda.

Peter and Jamie Fisher founded Fisher Private Travel in 2021, having worked for ten years for various UK and US operators and agencies. Peter and Jamie wanted to have more control over the clients they choose to work with, the suppliers they partner with, and the type of holidays they plan.
The business aims to create the same diverse, creative, and experiential type of holidays for their clients wherever they’re traveling in the world. Through their work in the travel industry, they’re fortunate to be very aware of the positive impact travel can have on local communities.
Tourism as a source of employment for local communities is an essential part of how they choose the suppliers they work with. Analysing and understanding how their suppliers re-invest in local communities through education and providing sustainable long-term opportunities inspires them to continue pushing for positive impact travel.
At Fisher Private Travel, they believe sustainable travel is at the core of creating once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Travel bridges cultural gaps and provides an economic lifeline for many. As a result, they only work with knowledgeable professionals across the globe who share their ethos and inspire with their passion to preserve biodiversity, conserve wildlife, and uplift local communities.

“Ayu” means “life” in Sanskrit and their trips foster a greater understanding of life in a multi-cultural biodiversity hotspot through unique experiences with fascinating locals. Cottar’s Safari Services (CSS) has been committed to conserving crucial wilderness areas in East Africa through travel since 1919. CSS donates 20% of its yearly net profits to securing critical wildlife corridors and biodiversity in the Olderkesi area of Kenya that in turn supports the local community. The Olderkesi Conservancy protects a crucial and fragile wildlife migratory corridor outside of the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
Cottar’s Safari Services’ motivation goes far deeper than simply providing places to stay; they only recommend destinations and safari properties that meaningfully support conservation, community, or cultural projects. They have screened some 100 lodges, camps and villas in East Africa based upon a set of strict criteria that proves those three tiers are being adhered to. For CSS, it is about worth to the planet and engaging experiences. If they can ensure happiness on an exceptional, life-changing safari while keeping the natural world safe, then that’s one step forward in their effort for regenerative travel. They aim to ensure that guests who travel with Cottar’s Safari Services return home with a greater understanding of the conservation and community work that their safari contributed to.
If you are conservation and community-minded or are interested in learning and understanding more about the 4Cs (conservation, community, culture, and commerce), then CSS has the perfect team to guide you on an impactful journey throughout East Africa.

They believe that this shared vision can be achieved with their sense of adventure. They respect the environment and have a deep commitment to sustainability, after all, where would we find our surprises without all the wonders of the world.

We Travel was born out of a need to create travel experiences that give back something to the communities visited by its travellers. Its founding members have all witnessed the weight of the tourist industry at close hand. Anders, Jakob, Lars, and Mikkel have collectively spent more than 60 years as travellers, with travellers, and creating trips for travellers. And, time and again, their most striking experiences have been their encounters with local people, whether it be an employee at a hotel, a street food cook, or a local member of the community.
We Travel was founded in 2017 with the explicit aim of offering bespoke travel experiences that are unique and which give something back to a destination and its people – from hideaways to hammocks. For a start, the focus is on South East Asia, because the founders of We Travel are experts in this region. Soon, the rest of the world will be part of the portfolio.
– We Travel hand picks all hotels and tours to make sure they support one or more of the components, which make up socially responsible travel: Conservation, people, environment, and identity.
– We Travel deals directly with hotels and small tour operators.
– We Travel redefines the idea that luxury is merely a matter of price and stars.
– We Travel invests a part of its profits in local projects, for instance, a project for 150 families in a Lombok village called The Rainbow Village.

History
In May 2020, FORTH Representation became Blue Planet Collection to mark a shift away from mainstream tourism towards sustainability. Disturbed by the extent to which mass tourism is clearly damaging destinations, we made an ethical decision to be proactive in promoting the amazing work of a healthier and more regenerative travel industry.
Mission
The Blue Planet Collection’s mission is to work solely with travel and hospitality businesses that are already committed to or are on a clear path to, protecting and enhancing the communities, cultures, wildlife, and landscapes they are found in. This includes private nature reserves, eco-lodges, responsible travel operators, local DMCs, biospheres, and sustainable destinations.
Vision
Our vision is to support travel agents, tour operators, and the travel industry generally, introducing them to our partner eco-suppliers, highlighting the positive benefits they receive when working with committed sustainable suppliers. By connecting those that put people and the planet first, and influencing others to do the same, we hope to be part of a kinder and more responsible travel supply chain.

About The Cayuga Collection:
The Cayuga Collection consists of eight lodges and sustainable hotels throughout Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama. All Cayuga properties seek to redefine the symbiosis of sustainability and luxury while always providing a sense of place by taking into account local culture and customs. To Cayuga, sustainability is about more than reusing your towel twice and simply recycling. Cayuga has banned single-use plastics from their properties for almost ten years and strives to sustain and enhance the local community and environment.
Most recently, Cayuga’s sustainable efforts saw the Collection win the People Award at the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) 2018 Tourism for Tomorrow Awards. Cayuga exclusively hires locally, training members of the communities that surround each of their properties and offers them benefits such as healthcare and opportunities for career progression.
Hans Pfister, the co-founder of Cayuga, was among the pioneers who were invited to the founding meeting for The Long Run in London with Jochen Zeitz in 2009. He comments, “The COVID-19 crisis showed who is for real, and we were impressed with the work of the Long Run during this difficult time. Therefore, Cayuga wanted to join again to work together on making tourism better.”

Their systems are fully customised to minimise energy operational expenditure, carbon emissions and dependence on dirty fuel.
Canopy Power began its journey in 2016, born from a vision of a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. They are based in Singapore–surrounded by thousands of remote islands and undeveloped rural areas with no access to electricity grids. In these places, communities and industries such as island resorts, plantations, fisheries and mines typically rely on expensive, polluting and logistically burdensome diesel power generation.
They believe that faces to sustainable, affordable and scalable electricity is a cornerstone of social and economic development, and that with the right technology and business model, their customers can be empowered to progress without harming the environment. They design and build renewable energy microgrids. These are hybrid systems with several energy generation sources such as Solar PV, wind or biomass integrated with energy storage systems and the incumbent electricity source–diesel or poor grid.
They employ in-house developed smart microgrid technology, along with the highest quality renewable energy components to offer robust solutions that provide clean, reliable and cost-efective electricity. In combination with their specialised microgrid finance product and long-term O&M offering, Canopy Power enables remote communities and businesses to unlock the potential for significant and sustainable economic growth.
Canopy Power’s ethos is built upon innovation and spearheading positive change, which is embodied in their motto ‘Empowerment Through Electrification’. The company consists of a culturally diverse team of individuals who are passionate about environmental sustainability and technology. They have decades of combined RE industry experience and an essential skillset covering engineering, product development, programming, data analytics and operations. They are backed by investors who have pan-industry experience and a global perspective.
So far, the company has received two rounds of funding, and was also awarded the Capability Development Grant by Enterprise Singapore in 2017 and 2018.

Established in 2017, connecting spaces designs, promotes, connects and curates sustainable tourism as a catalyst for holistic rural development.
We focus on the Himalayan Belt, as a globally significant headwater region, with uniquely rich biodiversity spanning a vertical ecosystem range of 8000 meters altitude, from the Terai flatlands in the south to the Himalayan peaks in the north.
Monika Schaffner, founder of connecting spaces, is an integrative geographer, born and raised in Nepal, with a background in international development, ecology and holistic healing methods. She sees tourism as a bridge between cultures, with the potential to spark and nourish appreciation both in the guests and their hosts, for the precious global value of our natural and cultural heritages. With appreciation comes realization: Of the utmost need to take care of and safeguard – in the long run – this very asset and reason why visitors come.
In search of a concise definition of what she means with “holistic” or “truly sustainable” Monika landed with The Long Run’s 4 C’s: This comprehensive framework brings to the point the intention and inspiration behind her work.
Connecting spaces currently implements an eco-village homestay concept in three villages of Madi Valley, in the Bufferzone of Chitwan National Park (Terai flatlands, Nepal). This is a collaborative project with the local communities, supported by sustainable architects, climate-sensitive experts, innovative and socially conscious water and energy system designers and visionary hospitality experts.

Patricio Gonzalez Morel is the founder of Efisur. He is a mechanical and environmental engineer who is passionate about showing hotels how they can minimise their environmental footprint and increase profits by improving the efficiency with which they use water, energy, materials, and chemicals in their facilities and operations. He has been in this line of work for the past 20+ years, long before sustainability became a catchword, and has practiced his trade in more than 200 hotels, from Chile to Japan and 23 other countries in between.
Being keenly aware of the many challenges faced by hoteliers, he learned long ago that simple is beautiful and, therefore, focuses his efforts on identifying improvement measures that are straightforward, quick to implement and extremely cost-effective – that is, the proverbial low hanging fruits which abound everywhere and which generally have a significant impact on efficiency as well as environmental performance.
Patricio works as a Singapore-based freelance consultant, but typically collaborate with various partner organisations to complete projects in Southeast Asia and beyond, including Build for Tomorrow in Malaysia, BookGreener in Indonesia, LightBlue Environmental Consulting in Thailand, Audit Diagnostic Solutions in Europe and Eficiencia Sur in Latin America.

The ambition of the Sumba Hospitality Foundation is to promote responsible tourism development for the Indonesian island of Sumba. To realise this dream, the Foundation manages a full boarding hospitality and permaculture school for underprivileged youth, as well as an exclusive eco-resort called Maringi (4 luxury pavilions, 5 villas, a pool, and a spa). By training local, disadvantaged youth to become responsible hospitality ambassadors and by demonstrating ‘best practices’ in our eco-resort, SHF directly impacts the Sumbanese community. The core values of SHF are environmental awareness, education, and community empowerment.
We are proud to transform 60 students into hospitality professionals yearly and to let our eco-resort guests personally witness our students’ enthusiasm. Our bamboo campus is 100% off-grid with solar panels and we recycle 90% of our wastewater for irrigation. Delicious, organic food is produced daily by our 2.5-hectare permaculture farm. Guests stay with us in beautifully designed rooms, knowing that they are supporting a great cause as all the income of our hotel goes back to the school.

Projecto Onçafari was created to promote environmental conservation and foster the socioeconomic development of the region where it is located through ecotourism and scientific studies. It is a conservation initiative which supports and promotes our 4C Framework. It works in the following three areas:
The goal of Onçafari Science is to monitor and research animal behavior in relation to the ecotourism activity, monitor the health of the animals protected by the project, in addition to understanding their behavior, physiology, and ecology to increase the scientific knowledge about their species and maximize their protection.
Onçafari Ecotourism works to habituate wild animals, such as jaguars and maned wolves, to the presence of our team’s vehicles. As the animals stop running away from our vehicles, researchers and visitors are no longer perceived as a threat, thus enabling the evolution of ecotourism in the region. Animal habituation does not mean domestication, but rather keeping them completely wild and free, without feeling threatened by the presence of vehicles.
Onçafari Rewild in partnership with Cenap (National Research Center for Carnivore Conservation) / ICMBio works to reintroduces Jaguars into the wild. An important tool to reestablish populations threatened with extinction.
Sally and Alice Travel Co. create tailor-made luxury safaris and holidays to Africa, the Indian Ocean and beyond. As people who are passionate about the world’s most remote and wild places, they care about their protection. The very act of setting up tourism operations in remote areas requires sustainable thinking and many of the places they are fortunate enough to visit and send their clients to wouldn’t be there without the work of conservationists.
Sally and Alice Travel Co. believe that people are at the heart of extraordinary experiences. Their preferred accommodation is boutique and owner-run as they find that the lodges and hotels that make every effort to have a positive impact on their local communities and environment almost always provide the best possible experience for their guests. That’s why Sally and Alice Travel Co. support The Long Run as an Affiliate Member.

Friends of Borneo was started in 2012 to support local communities in Borneo to find solutions for sustainable living. Many of these communities have lived what we would define as sustainable lifestyles but the emerging threats of lands lost due to industrial development in Borneo has meant these communities are increasingly forced to sustain themselves with much less natural resources to draw from.
Friends of Borneo is based in Toronto, Canada, where founder, Robert Hii currently resides. Past activities of the group have included supporting local land fights in Indonesian Borneo against land grabs, permaculture as a means of living off less land and conservation with the cultivation of fauna both with local communities and a demonstration project with the University of Muhammadiyah, Central Kalimantan.
Active projects as of November 2016 include a project in Central Kalimantan where we hope to have indigenous customary laws being formally adopted as a way to resolve the many land conflicts there. Focus area is in the highland areas of Sarawak state, Malaysian Borneo where we are working with local villages to develop eco tourism and medicinal herbs as sources of income.
Friends of Borneo believes that eco tourism can become an essential element in helping these communities to not only preserve their culture and traditional ways of living but will also enable them to progress. The cultivation of exotic Bornean herbs based on traditional knowledge and usage is to supplement income from tourism.

SMOKESILVER TRAVEL design and plan bespoke safaris to Africa. The service they provide is relatively simple. Using their knowledge of Africa they’ll create the perfect safari itinerary for their clients.
SMOKESILVER TRAVEL was founded on three important principles. Exceptional local knowledge of Africa, personal service to their clients and a contribution to nature conservation and cultural heritage in Africa. These fundamentals – knowledge, service and commitment – are three of the most important criteria by which they select the destinations, accommodation, guides and preferred local partners in each itinerary.
Conservation is central to their commitment to sustainable tourism in Africa. They only recommend places that have these beliefs and practices at the core of their operations.

HM Design is a unique one-of-a-kind planning and design firm which practices its very own quadruple bottom line philosophy – one that balances economic, environmental, social and spiritual aspects for every project.
HM Design believes that in this global age of heightened cultural and environmental sensitivity, the planning and design process needs to be holistic and sustainable in all aspects. In every project, HM Design tries to create an eco-plan or eco-design that has never been created before. Each plan and design is a response to the local context: physical, metaphysical and cultural. All HM Design projects have a respect for animals, plants, local people and the spirit of the place. The approach right from the outset is that of Low-impact development. This stewardship-motto of taking care of Mother Earth and all the species that inhabit on it begins right on day one and continues into Construction Supervision.
The firm began in Nairobi, Kenya in 1990 as a traditional Architecture and Landscape Architectural practice and is now based in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

All for Nature Travel combines sustainable tourism with nature conservation. On the other hand, All for Nature Consultancy advises companies and nature conservation projects on CSR and extra fundraising opportunities in order to achieve their goals.
They only offer journeys based upon sustainable travel and a donation for nature conservation is included in every trip. This is not only to generate income for nature conservation projects, but also to inspire Western consumers to care about our planet.
All for Nature Travel visits habitats of endangered animals around the world and gives customers a privileged insight into nature conservation. Sustainability is paramount for them, as well as contribution to nature conservation. For their customers this means the best wildlife experiences, while each year 10% of their turnover is invested back into nature conservation.
They are the first tour operator in the Netherlands and Belgium that combines nature conservation with tourism and they have received the Biodiversity Innovation Award for this in 2011 by the Dutch Ministry of Economics, Farming and Innovation.
Africa Geographic is internationally respected for its award-winning media, active online communities and for its impact on tourism and conservation.
They publish print and digital (online and app) magazines, blogs, books and calendars to an ever-increasing international audience and we manage a large and extremely vocal social media community. They also offer bespoke expeditions for savvy travellers seeking something just a bit more special than usual.
Their entire business strategy and mission is in line with the Long Run Philosophy and the 4C approach. They believe that education is core to conservation of culture, communities, ecosystems and biodiversity and as a media company that is what we focus on. They inspire, educate and resource people to do good for Africa. They make eco-warriors out of kids, turn poachers into game guards, and we give ordinary people a voice and reason to dream. This is their reason for existence and what they have been doing for more than 20 years.
The future will see them expanding exponentially our digital footprint and ecosystem, using the core digital strengths of interactivity, 2-way communication, social sharing and e-commerce.

Sibylle Riedmiller, German-born Social Scientist, has spent all her professional life as a development worker in Latin America and Africa, where she managed, and provided consultancy services to, several education reform and natural resource management programs of UNESCO, the German Aid Agency GTZ and other donors.
In 1991, she left the aid industry and founded Chumbe Island Coral Park Ltd. (CHICOP), which turned formerly uninhabited Chumbe Island in Zanzibar/Tanzania into a private marine park and forest reserve. A Visitors’ Centre and Eco-lodge built with state-of the-art eco-technology provide funding for park management and environmental education programs for local schools and others. This has created one of the first private marine parks in the world that is now fully sustained with income from ecotourism. CHICOP was certified as a LRD in 2010.
A passionate marine conservationist, sailor and diver, Sibylle lives in Tanga/Tanzania since 1982, where she is now semi-retired, and spends most of her time working with international and local NGOs for improved marine governance in Tanzania. She is a member of the IUCN World Commission of Protected Areas (WCPA), the Tanzanian chapter of the Council of the NGO Leadership for Conservation Africa, Chair of the Conservation Committee of the Board of the Hotel Association of Tanzania (HAT), the Secretary of the Tanga Tourism Network Association (TATONA).
In 2016, Sibylle has also been awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz (Cross of Order of Merit) by the German President for her lifetime achievements for conservation, which culminated in Chumbe Island Coral Park Ltd.

ALTOP stands for “All Love to our planet”. For 30 years, the publishing house has consistently been committed to the promotion of green solutions, products and services. Together with their partners, they give orientation to key decision-makers and help them to link economic success with social responsibility.
The publishing house began in 1984 with the alternatives Directory (now ECO-World life – the shopping guide for a healthy, enjoyable and sustainable lifestyle). The aim was to stimulate consumption in a targeted way and to ensure the urgently needed networking of companies and environmental activists.
In 2006, the publishing house responded to the increasing global discussion about responsible, sustainable business practices realising sustainability should no longer be seen as a future vision, but as an action taken in the daily business process. The response was to launch the magazine “Forum Sustainable Development”, the highest reach CSR magazine for politics, business, non-profit organisations and society in Germany. Forum Sustainability is published quarterly, brings daily online contributions and thus provides a cross-medial communication network.
