The Black Soldier Fly and Organic Waste Management

Every guest who stays at a remote lodge produces roughly two kilograms of organic waste per night. That waste has to go somewhere. When your nearest landfill is a boat ride away, a long dirt road, or already at capacity, "somewhere" becomes a very real and very expensive problem.

In March 2026 we brought together three member properties navigating organic waste from very different corners of the world: Nikoi Island in Indonesia, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve in South Africa, and Sirikoi Lodge in Kenya. All three have turned to the same unlikely solution: the Black Soldier Fly.

This report captures those learnings: the real numbers, the honest challenges (one property's colony has collapsed three times), and the expert recommendations shaping how our members approach this technology.
