The Long Run’s 2024 Impact Report
Tourism can be a powerful force for good. The Long Run’s 2024 Impact Report showcases how our global community of nature-based tourism businesses is proving this every day, protecting over 23 million acres of land and sea, investing more than US$17 million in people and planet, and supporting 116 cultures worldwide.
At the heart of this work is our 4Cs framework – Conservation, Community, Culture and Commerce – a practical, holistic approach to sustainability that helps tourism businesses thrive while safeguarding the natural and cultural heritage that makes destinations unique.
This year’s report highlights:
Nature conservation at scale – from rewilding projects in Africa to marine protection in Asia and Latin America.
Community empowerment – over 345,000 people directly benefitted through jobs, education, health, and enterprise.
Cultural stewardship – local traditions, artisans, and sacred sites celebrated and sustained across 116 communities.
Commerce with purpose – more than US$17 million reinvested into conservation, community, and culture, proving that responsible business is resilient business.
The report also features powerful stories from our members – from Saruni Basecamp in Kenya, where landowners received $2.6 million in conservation fees, to Huilo Huilo in Chile, where endangered species are being reintroduced to the wild, to Castle Leslie in Ireland, where profits support inclusive employment and heritage restoration.
In 2024, The Long Run itself grew stronger too: we launched a new website, welcomed 12 new members, expanded regional teams across four continents, and hosted the world’s first Virtual Impact Show – a 12-hour showcase of best practice in sustainable tourism.
Why this matters
Travel and tourism face increasing scrutiny for their environmental and social footprint. The Long Run demonstrates what is possible when businesses move beyond sustainability “claims” to measurable, credible impact. Our members are proving that regenerative travel is not only viable, but essential to the future of the industry.
The 2024 Impact Report is both a celebration and a call to action: to invest in tourism models that protect biodiversity, empower communities, and build resilient economies.
