Timbuktu was founded in 2014 with a clear mission: to make far-flung corners of the world more accessible by empowering travellers to plan epic journeys through its innovative website and global team of specialists. With experts based in countries ranging from Kenya and the Czech Republic to Chile and the United States, Timbuktu offers a truly international approach to travel planning. The company’s headquarters are located in Cape Town, South Africa.
As a company that takes travellers to some of the most remote corners of the world, Timbuktu recognises the importance of protecting the places, people, and wildlife encountered along the way. Through its Positive Impact initiative, the company places the 4Cs—Conservation, Community, Culture, and Commerce—at the core of its operations. For every booking made, Timbuktu donates $50 from its own funds to support meaningful causes. These contributions directly benefit communities in the destinations featured, supporting initiatives ranging from girls’ education across Africa to the protection of vulnerable youth in Vietnam. Additionally, Timbuktu partners with an organisation dedicated to establishing new national parks in Patagonia.

CONSERVATION
Timbuktu Travel actively supports wildlife conservation through strategic partnerships with eco-conscious lodges and organisations.
Timbuktu Travel believes conservation and community empowerment go hand in hand. To support this, they back iLearnabout, an after-school programme educating children in Zambia and Kenya, and contribute to Rewilding Chile, which creates national parks, restores ecosystems, and involves local communities in protecting wild spaces.
COMMUNITY
Through its Positive Impact initiative, Timbuktu Travel places a strong focus on women’s empowerment, youth skills development, and the protection of vulnerable children.
The company supports after-school programmes in Cape Town in partnership with the Amy Foundation, promotes girls’ education in East Africa through CAMFED, and aids at-risk children in Vietnam via The Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation and its anti-trafficking initiative. These partnerships provide vital education, resources, and long-term support to help empower communities.
CULTURE
Timbuktu Travel is committed to respecting cultural heritage by offering immersive experiences led by local guides. These journeys foster meaningful cultural exchanges, preserve indigenous traditions, and contribute to local economies.
Dedicated to respectful engagement, Timbuktu Travel builds lasting relationships with local communities, organisations, and conservationists in the regions where it operates.
COMMERCE
Believing that responsible, active tourism is a powerful tool to address environmental and economic challenges, Timbuktu Travel donates $50 from its own funds for every booking made.
The company aims to inspire travellers to journey with purpose and contribute to positive, lasting change in the destinations they visit. Soon, guests will also have the option to contribute a donation of their choice. Timbuktu promotes sustainable commerce by encouraging responsible tourism and ensuring that local communities benefit economically from tourism initiatives.
