Umacanoa
Destination Management Company
member since May 2025
The name “umacanoa,” meaning “a canoe,” reflects their belief that the right-sized vessel can reach places larger boats cannot, all while leaving a lighter impact. As an owner-operated DMC, they partner exclusively with those who share their passion for Brazil. Every trip is carefully selected to ensure focused, personal, and dedicated service.
They hold a deep belief that tourism is a powerful tool for transformation—yet whether that transformation is positive or negative depends on how each person chooses to travel and engage at every stage of the journey. They see Brazil as a key piece in understanding the complexity of modern society. Few people are aware that, of the estimated 10 million people taken from the African continent to be enslaved in the Americas, 6 million were brought to Brazil. By comparison, 500,000 were taken to the USA, and the lasting impact on American society is well-documented. Now, imagine the influence on Brazil, especially considering it was the very last country to abolish slavery.
In practice, their company works directly with local people, avoiding outsourcing operations to smaller companies in Brazil. They have personally met every local guide and host they collaborate with, ensuring fair partnerships and often paying rates more than four times the market standard. Operating as a small company—averaging 45–50 trips a year—allows them to maintain these practices without creating unfair competition with other operators.
Environmentally, their foremost cause is the Amazon, with at least 5% of annual profits dedicated to supporting projects in the region.
